Her first internationally published short story, "Madeline's Birthday", appeared in the Septemissue of The New Yorker. Despite residing in Paris, Gallant never surrendered her Canadian citizenship nor applied for French citizenship. She moved to Europe with the hope of being able to work exclusively as a writer rather than supporting herself with other work, and lived briefly in Spain before settling in Paris, France, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Gallant left journalism in 1950 to pursue fiction writing full-time. While working for the Standard, she published some of her early short stories, both in the newspaper and in the magazines Preview and Northern Review. In her 20s, Gallant briefly worked for the National Film Board before taking a job as a reporter for the Montreal Standard (1944–1950). According to Gallant's biographer, the marriage was "briefer than the dates suggest since her husband was in the armed forces overseas for much of the time". She married John Gallant, a Winnipeg musician, in 1942. She spent most of the years 1935–1940 in and around New York City, the setting for many of her earlier stories. Gallant was educated at 17 public, private, and convent schools in the United States and Canada. Gallant did not learn of her father's death for several years and later told The New York Times: "I had a mother who should not have had children, and it's as simple as that." Young died in 1932 of kidney disease, and his widow soon remarried and moved to New York, leaving their daughter behind with a guardian. In fairness, I will let the jury still be out and give him a chance.Gallant was born in Montreal, Quebec, the only child of Albert Stewart Roy de Trafford Young, a Canadian furniture salesman and painter who was the son of an officer in the British Army, and his wife, Benedictine Wiseman. The guy was terrible last game, a wall this game, but still has to let in the shit goal the teams has to fight to make up. Whitecloud, not his best preseason game, was fine though, Korzak is ready for a spot. Really the dman prospect pipeline is solid for VGK. He is not a bad dman, and noticeable in a good way at times. Hayes had two nice goals from the point, and good for him, but yeah not ready to give him a roster spot or anything. I expected to see more from Kolesar this year and I don’t really see anything. He is supposed to be physical, yet #15 is way more physical of a player, finishes checks etc. I am questioning if Kolesar is blocking other players from that spot. I thought that Cotter, who has been on fire, was average on this line last night. They didn’t strike me as better than the AHL lines, specifically Kolesar. I think the opposite of the Roy/Kolesar line. I thought his line looked better than AHL players as it should. I think he looks good going into this year. He had a real fast sharp release a couple of times last night. Karlsson has been working on his release, that seems noticeabe to me. Just a couple of observations from last night. They will spend more time in their own zone, but you can never spend that much time down here. Needless to say, VGK allowed way too many dangerous chances this period.
